A broad and Balanced Education at Key Stage 3
Students at Barnhill study the complete National curriculum during Year 7, 8 and 9 with additional subjects such as Dance and Drama adding to a diverse and stimulating experience which gives them the essential knowledge and skills that will enrich their future lives and careers. This is supplemented by a full PSHE programme in form time and assembly.

In Year 9 Pupils will continue to study the full national curriculum but will have the chance to receive an additional hour per fortnight in a specialist subject. They also have the chance to start studying a professional option which they can carry forward to GCSE.

Personalised Key Stage 4 Education
There are core subjects that all students must study at Barnhill:
- GCSE English Language
- GCSE English Literature
- GCSE Mathematics
- GCSE Sciences (Combined or Separate)
- Core Physical Education
- Computing (taught through the curriculum and enrichment)
- Religious Education (taught through the curriculum and tutor time)
- Citizenship (taught through the curriculum and tutor time)
- PSHE (taught during tutor time)
In addition to Core subjects, students will study FOUR options subjects. They will be able to choose from a very broad range of subjects that meet their needs and that interest them.
This is an exciting time of year for students about to enter Key Stage 4 at Barnhill. We know students are eager and ready to make choices about what they would like to study, and with the right information, advice and guidance, they will choose subjects that fit with their goals and needs.

English Baccalaureate (EBacc)
Many of you will study the English Baccalaureate which means that some of your options are more guided, but that will not mean you will not be able to study a broad range of options subjects. Having a spread of different subjects across KS4 will help you to keep your options open for the Sixth Form. The choice is yours, but you must think carefully about what you choose.
The English Baccalaureate recognises that students have successfully studied a specific collection of subjects: English, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities. ‘Successfully studied’ means that students have achieved grade 5 or higher in every subject.
At Barnhill, many students will take the option subjects required for the EBacc. The ambition of many of our students is to study academic Sixth Form courses and progress on to Higher education and the EBacc route ensures the maximum choice for pupils post 16.

Options Meeting
Each student will have a personal options mentor. You will be notified of this by letter. In the meeting, your mentor will discuss which subjects are most suited to your abilities and career aspirations.
When all students have had their interviews, we will be able to confirm which subjects will be running and will discuss with you any that you have chosen that are no longer available.
New courses will begin at the start of Year 10.
Key Stage 5 Education to Prepare you for work and Higher Study
Most pupils study three Level 3 qualifications with a small number taking four qualifications. We offer a wide range of Academic and Vocational qualifications. The full list can be found in the 6th form section of the website.
The formal curriculum is supplemented with Enrichment sessions that encompass volunteering opportunities, the EPQ qualification, study skills, life skills, physical well being and work experience opportunities.
