Character Curriculum

Personal Development

At Barnhill we recognise the importance of Personal development, both inside and outside of the classroom.

Personal Development Intent

At Barnhill, we plan our broad and balanced curriculum to develop our pupils’ character so that they become respectful and aspiring members of society and capable members of our community. Our wide curriculum is planned to promote their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Barnhill Changemakers

Changemakers are those that do more for the good of the whole. To be a changemaker takes tenacity, creativity, originality, and confidence. At Barnhill we develop student character so that everyone has the opportunity to become a changemaker.

Student Leadership

We create multiple opportunities for pupil leadership both within and outside the classroom, including leaders in different subject areas, our school council, year 11 prefect system and Green Group. We strive to develop individuals who play a proactive role in providing support for their peers, whilst also representing the school in opportunities where they may tour / interview / debate with attending visitors. We encourage students to develop their personal and interpersonal skills through the wide range of student leadership opportunities.

PSHRE

At Barnhill, our PSHRE curriculum develops the knowledge and skills that young people need to be safe, healthy and to flourish as citizens in modern Britain. PSHRE plays a vital role in supporting the school’s mission to develop pupils and students who are respectful, tolerant, and aspiring members of the community. With input from the Health-Related Behaviour Survey results and the PSHE Association, we have developed a spiral curriculum that aims to achieve this through 4 key topics areas each year:

  • Health and wellbeing
  • Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)
  • Life beyond school
  • Online safety

Our wide PSHRE curriculum is planned to promote their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. This includes topics of a six-week course on SRE which has been carefully sequenced across Year 7 to Year 13. As a result, students have an age-appropriate understanding of SRE. This provides students with specific strategies on how to keep physically and mentally well both inside and outside of school. Students also have the opportunity to further delve into topics through workshops/external guest speakers.
